Ellie was born six years after a mutant strain of the Cordyceps fungus began infecting human beings, turning them into zombie-like creatures and mutants. Some fans felt they had been misled because Ellie didn't appear to be gay in the first game, while others tried to find ways to explain away Ellie's kiss with Riley in a way that made her sexuality slightly more ambiguous.

The best way to find out Ellie’s true sexuality is to play the game. Both games and the TV show don’t shy around her gender orientation, openly presenting it to the players and viewers. Yes, Ellie is indeed gay in the original Naughty Dog videos games and HBO’s TV adaptation of The Last of Us. Not only does the show confirm it, it also embraces it.

But The Last of Us Part II co-writer Halley Gross confirmed in no uncertain terms that Ellie is gay. That aspect of her character is explored in more detail in the second game. While I could go on about other amazing video games that deserve adaptations, or the ones that are going to be getting them like God of War , The Last of Us series has always been my favorite for many years.

It might be because of my love of zombies, or just badass female protagonists, but even besides that, I love it. As a young teenager, I never really noticed it until I realized I was bisexual and that there was a character like me as a protagonist in a video game that I truly held dear.

Now, since the adaptation for the show is coming out, I just have to talk about the queer characters in The Last of Us as well as its other games, and just how important they really are to the gaming industry as a whole.
